Frequently Asked Questions

What is stamp duty?

Stamp duty is a government tax charged on property transfers and legal documents. When you buy a property in India, you must pay stamp duty on the sale deed or other conveyance document based on the transaction value or the ready reckoner/circle rate, whichever is higher.

Do women get stamp duty concessions?

Yes, many states including Maharashtra, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh offer a 1% concession on stamp duty if the property is registered in a woman's name or if a woman is a co-owner. The exact discount varies by state and may be subject to conditions.

What about stamp duty on gift deeds?

Stamp duty on gift deeds is generally lower than on sale deeds, especially for gifts between close family members. In Maharashtra, gift duty is around 3% (2% for women), while other states have their own rates. Property tax and registration charges may still apply.

Is this calculator accurate?

This calculator provides estimates based on commonly published stamp duty rates. Actual amounts may differ due to ready reckoner rates, circle rates, surcharges, and government notifications. For legal property transactions, always verify with the sub-registrar's office or a qualified lawyer.
